Allen and I visited Death Valley National Park in mid-March, when it was a comfortable 80 degrees at Badwater Basin (elevation 282 feet below sea level).
We walked a half-mile into the basin then returned to the car to continue our adventures in the vast park.
I kept Death Valley on my weather app, just so I could look at on days like this. Todayâs high there is expected to be 126. It will âcool downâ overnight to 99 degrees. That makes temperatures here in the Grand Valley â 106ish in the day, 70ish overnight â a bit more tolerable, right?
So, how do you like your eggs cooked on the sidewalk? Fried or scrambled? ....

Bringing equity outdoors

There are children who were born and raised in the Grand Valley who have never been to Colorado National Monument or camped or fished or hiked Mount Garfield.
For those who would ask âwhy?â when access to public lands is so readily available, the reasons are multi-hued, but mainly socio-economic in nature.
Parks passes cost money. Outdoor recreation gear can be specialized and expensive. Transportation to get to a trail head may be hard to come by. Itâs intimidating to learn new skills like kayaking or rock climbing without instruction. And so on.
Thereâs no shortage of organizations in this valley whose missions include exposing âunderservedâ youth to outdoor experiences. Colorado Canyons Association, the Outdoor Wilderness Lab and the Riverside Educational Center are just a few examples. Weâre lucky in ways that many communities in Colorado arenât. Well-formed nonprofits here either have grant writers on staff or relationships ....

The bike ride my oldest and I took last weekend for Motherâs Day was the eight-mile round-trip section of the Riverfront Trail from Fruita to Loma.
It was the second time Iâd ridden that section of the trail, his first. We had to pedal into some fairly strong winds heading west toward Loma, but knowing weâd have the breeze as a tail wind kept us pushing hard, up the final hill near the Kokopelli Trailhead.
But the spring weather did what spring weather does â the wind switched direction on us â and we had to pedal into the wind on the return trip, too. Whatâs up with that? In spite of the wind changing its mind, we agreed it was a âsplendifferousâ day. ....
