FREDONIA – The COVID-19 pandemic will go down in history for a number of reasons, including how many people it affected, from health to home life and everything in between.
Many industries in the area have changed and adapted to the situation thrust upon them in 2020, none more-so than the health care industry.
“2020 was like riding a tilt-a-whirl that was spinning really fast with no real guidance,” said Emelia Harley, vice president of patient care services and chief nursing officer at UPMC Chautauqua. “For health care in general, this has been a really, really tough year. There has been an incredible amount of illness and death that people have experienced … and I don’t necessarily mean local, but throughout the nation. It’s been tough and it’s been stressful for all.” ....

For Future Nurses, a Critical Return to the Classroom

(Updated at 11:05 a.m.) In the past eight months, the students in Vanessa Edwards’s nursing class have become well-versed in adapting to change.
After starting the school year in a virtual setting in July, they were among the roughly 8,000 students that attended in-person classes in the fall, only to revert to online classes when Fairfax County Public Schools paused plans for in-person instruction after winter break.
So, no one was fazed when a fire alarm blared through the halls of Fairfax County Adult High School in Springfield half an hour into Edwards’s first in-person class of 2021 on Wednesday (Feb. 17). ....

Sylvia S. Dick, 79, of Sinclairville, N.Y., passed away at 2:57 a.m. Thurs-day, Jan. 14, 2021, in UPMC Chautauqua.
A lifelong area resident, she was born Jan. 31, 1941, in Jamestown, N.Y., a daughter of the late Gustav A. and Anita E. Bloomdahl Seastrom.
She was a 1959 graduate of Bemus Point High School and went on to at-tend the Weaver Airline School from 1959-1960 and worked for Eastern Airlines Communications in New York City. In 1998, she decided to further her education and enter the nursing field graduating from the BOCES School of Practical Nursing in 1999.
In earlier years, she was employed by the former Falconer Plate Glass for 28 years and later worked for several health care agencies as a Licensed Practical Nurse. ....
