Westport High School prepares for final days at old building

WESTPORT The junior/senior high school building in September for the first time in over 70 years will not be active with students.
But school leaders are making sure that this building goes out with a bang and not a whimper.
The school district in September will open a new grades 5 through 12 school building on Old County Road. Officials are uncertain about the future of the current high school building on Main Road, which educates students right now in grades 7 through 12.
We have several fun activities planned to end the year here at WJSHS. These include an ice cream social, a Grade 8 promotion parade and cookout, senior breakfast, and the final Westport Junior Senior High School graduation from this building, said Principal Laura Charette. ....

Westport rejects post-holiday 'pause' on in-person learning

WESTPORT The school district’s nurses and administrators recently recommended that all community school students learn remotely for the first two weeks of January.
The School Committee on Thursday did not support the plan, so district students will continue to report to in-person learning following the holiday break. Students can continue to learn remotely, if they prefer. The holiday break begins Dec. 23, with an early dismissal, and it concludes on Jan. 3.
School will be back in session on Jan. 4.
Interim School Superintendent Thomas Aubin said that school nurses were recommending a remote period because the school district and community at large witnessed a spike in positive COVID-19 cases after Thanksgiving. Aubin said that with a long holiday break, there is a stronger likelihood that some families will travel, increasing their exposure. ....
