Sullivan $15,000 early retirement incentive for teachers outlined

BLOUNTVILLE â So exactly what is required to claim the $15,000 (minus taxes) early retirement incentive for veteran Sullivan County teachers?
The Board of Education voted 7-0 at its Dec. 10 meeting to adopt the recommendation of the Teacher Salary Equalization Committee, a group created by and chaired by school board Chairman Randall Jones.
The move will allow the school system to save money by not refilling unneeded positions after the opening of West Ridge High School in August 2021 and by filling needed positions with younger teachers who would make less.
Ironically, however, Jones said the plan is also a step toward raising county teacher pay across the board to make it more comparable to Bristol, Kingsport and Johnson City teacher pay. ....

How would public-private partnership for West Ridge High road work?

BLOUNTVILLE â Where public entities have failed to build better access to a new Sullivan County high school opening next August, a public-private partnership called Jericho Partners may come to the rescue.
The idea, if it works, would get the access road to West Ridge High School on Lynn Road off Exit 63 of Interstate 81 in place by the August 2021 opening of the 1,700- to 1,900-student school.
And involved with the potential project is Jim Belgeri, the former Sullivan County commissioner of roads and a civil engineer who proposed a West Ridge access road project and funding for it when he was in office. However, the Sullivan County Commission turned down the idea. ....

Sullivan school board gets mixed comments on virtual schooling, one against in-person extra-curricular activities

BLOUNTVILLE â Why are Sullivan County Schools closed to in-person learning, at least through the Christmas holiday, while students still are allowed in the schools for athletic events, concerts and plays?
The head of the school system says extensive protocols and precautions are taken for the non-academic events in schools that are otherwise shut down for students.
Alicia D. Flanary, a nurse practitioner and mother of two daughters at Holston Elementary School, asked the question at a recent Board of Education meeting about the school system allowing extracurricular activities such as sports and concerts during the virtual learning time.
Virtual learning continues in Sullivan County schools through half a day on Friday, Dec. 18. School resumes in early January, but it is unknown if it will be in-person then. ....

South Rebels may be no more at school year's end

BLOUNTVILLE â The days of Sullivan South Rebels may be coming to an end, much to the chagrin of a graduate of Sullivan South High School who serves on the Sullivan County Commission.
Among the three options in an online survey about naming the middle school to be located on the current Sullivan South High School campus, Sullivan South Middle School is not an option.
The options are Sullivan Heights Middle School, Sullivan West Middle School and West Valley Middle School. The survey can be accessed through the school system’s website, www.sullivank12.net.
And that just doesnât sit well with County Commissioner Angie Stanley, who Thursday night told the Board of Education at its meeting that she was asked by parents, alumni and constituents to urge the board to consider Sullivan South Middle as the new school name. ....
