Nine Oregon tribes to receive $10.5 million for affordable housing under American Rescue Plan Act
Oregon s U.S. Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley announced March 19 that nine Oregon tribes will receive more than $10.5 million in affordable housing grants under the recently passed American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 to help with the recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. Warm Springs Confederated Tribes will receive $1.06 million.
Warm Springs Housing Authority Executive Director Danielle Wood said the housing block grant will help with the housing needs in Warm Springs.
Warm Springs Housing Authority was excited with this new opportunity, and we are exploring how best to use these funds to house our people, she said. ....

Nation's first Tribal Community Response Plan announced as part of a pilot project to address MMIP cases | Top Story


PABLO, Mont. - The nation’s first Tribal Community Response Plan (TCRP) was announced Thursday as a part of a pilot project to address Missing and Murdered Indigenous Persons cases.
According to a release from the Department of Justice, the pilot project was launched by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Montana and Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes (CKST) in accordance with the U.S. Department of Justice’s Missing and Murdered Indigenous Persons (MMIP) Initiative, and the President’s Operation Lady Justice Task Force, and in furtherance of the goals in Savanna’s Act.
“CSKT’s development of a community response plan is a historic milestone in addressing this serious national issue. CSKT’s initiative to join in this pilot project will help other tribes across the country as they develop their own TCRPs. Police in the eastern Indian state of Jharkhand have arrested nine people in connection with the mob lynching of a 26-year-old Muslim man on the outskirts of Ranchi.
According to media reports, this was the second such incident in the state capital in one week. Earlier, a 22-year-old man was beaten in the Upper Bazar area on suspicion of theft and later died. ....

Glacier National Park east entrance approved to open for 2021 season


In March 2020, the tribe declared a state of emergency after due to the pandemic.
According to a release from the Blackfeet Tribe, the council decided to open the entrance, located on the Blackfeet Reservation, due to the heightened availability of COVID-19 tests and vaccines. The tribe also advanced into Phase 3 of the COVID19 Phased Plan on March 15, 2021 which allows more opening on the Blackfeet Reservation.
“With the move to phase 3 as well as consultation with medical authorities and the high rate of vaccination on the Blackfeet Reservation, the Council felt that it was time to allow the east entrance to open,” Blackfeet Tribe’s Public Information Officer James McNeely said in the release. ....

COVID-19 REPORT: Total coronavirus cases in Oklahoma stalls at 432,793


OKLAHOMA CITY – The Oklahoma State Department of Health’s data on its website showed Tuesday the state’s total number of coronavirus cases since the pandemic began now sets at 432,793 with 416,604 listed as recovered, 11,401 active and 4,788 deceased.
The number of active cases in the state decreased by 464 from Monday’s reported total of 11,865.
In the 14 counties that make up the Cherokee Nation, the state’s data showed a total of 133,899 coronavirus cases with 129,282 recovered, 3,113 active and 1,504 deceased. The number of active cases in the 14 counties decreased by 152 from Monday’s reported total of 3,265.
As of March 12, numbers, from the Cherokee Nation, show 14,945 confirmed COVID-19 cases in the tribe’s health system since the pandemic began. The number of confirmed cases in the tribe’s health system increased by 61 from the previous reported total of 14,884. ....
