India variant discovered in schools as second Fruita school added to outbreak list

With only two weeks to go in the school year, a second Fruita school has been added to Mesa County’s outbreak list.
Eight positive cases have been reported at Fruita Middle School, 239 N. Maple St., since May 4, according to the Mesa County Public Health data dashboard. Shelledy Elementary School, 353 N. Mesa St., is only a stone’s throw away and first reported an outbreak on April 27. That case count is now up to 25.
According to the School District 51 data dashboard, 41 Shelledy students and 23 Fruita Middle students are quarantined.
“The end of the year is supposed to be a fun time. It breaks my heart to quarantine classes right now knowing that they won’t be back in the classroom for the rest of the school year,” District 51 Nursing Coordinator Tanya Marvin said. “But student safety is our top priority and that’s more important than fun year-end activities.” ....

Fruita for Equality is organizing a reading program featuring “Rising Out of Hatred: The Awakening of a Former White Nationalist” by Eli Saslow.
A launch event for the program will be at 5 p.m. Friday, May 7, at Fruita Civic Center Park with an open community discussion about equality, race, diversity and inclusivity, according to a news release from Mesa County Libraries, which is one of the collaborators for the program.
“Rising Out of Hatred” is about Derek Black, a former American white supremacist.
The book “contains a powerful narrative about one’s capacity to change in their heart and mind. We are excited to share this narrative with our community and hope that it sparks a healthy discussion on community values,” said Shanachie Carroll, a member of the Fruita for Equality community and manager of the Fruita Branch library, in the ....

COVID-19 Colorado K-12 School Outbreaks New Record

It s a good thing the school year is almost over: The latest report from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment lists 58 new COVID-19 outbreaks at K-12 schools, the most in a single week since the department began releasing weekly outbreak lists over a year ago.
Of the 859 outbreaks currently under active investigation by the CDPHE, K-12 schools account for 251, or just over 29 percent of the total. That appears to be a record, too.
The CDPHE considers an entity an outbreak after two or more COVID-19 cases among residents, staffers or other people connected to a specific location are confirmed within a fourteen-day period, or two or more cases of respiratory illness with an onset of symptoms within a fourteen-day period are paired with at least one additional COVID-19 diagnosis. The vast majority of businesses and facilities identified as outbreaks remain open while working with the department to monitor symptoms and prevent future infections. ....
