Debate now swirls over long-time beach feature, amid calls to bar access

The Barbados Government has stepped in to address cries from some sections of the public to close access to that area of Brighton Beach, off Spring Garden, St Michael popularly known as The Hot Pot.
The state’s intervention followed pleas from several Barbadians including the father of the latest person to die from drowning while bathing in the vicinity of the popular bathing spot. A “danger” sign has existed for sometime now, warning members of the public “Do not swim here – strong current.”
The body of 21-year-old Jovonni Moise of Dash Valley, St George washed ashore on Monday after he disappeared while bathing there with friends the day before. ....

Sargasssum brings another ‘golden tide’ on our shorelines

For yet another year, massive quantities of sargassum are seen washing up along our coasts and is causing concern among fisherfolk and other beach users. This new source of sargassum is now linked to climate change and ocean eutrophication, and these are likely to continue supporting significant sargassum blooms into the future. As such, annual mass influxes of sargassum into the Caribbean Sea are now being considered as the new normal, requiring sustainable management responses and long-term adaptation (Desrochers et al. 2020).
Pelagic (free-floating) sargassum, a brown algae from the equatorial Atlantic, comprises a mixture of two or possibly three different sargassum species, namely sargassum fluitans III, sargassum natans I, and sargassum natans VIII (Schell, Goodwin, and Siuda 2015) that forms large floating mats often referred to as “golden tides.” The ....

The Centre for Resource Management and Environmental Studies (CERMES) from the University of the West Indies (The UWI) held a special hybrid of real-time and virtual instruction at the Charnocks headquarters of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and the Blue Economy on the challenges and opportunities presented in controlling the spread of sargassum seaweed.
Before it began officially, the CERMES co-editors of the Caribbean Blue Economy book – Professors Robin Mahon and Hazel Oxenford –were on hand at Charnocks to present Minister Humphrey with an autographed copy just before the sargassum workshop started. ....
