Oxford flood scheme plans will be submitted later this year

WORK on a £150m flood defence scheme to protect western areas of Oxford start again by the end of the year.
The Oxford Flood Alleviation Scheme is a plan to create a new stream in the floodplain, which would protect areas like Botley Road, Abingdon Road and South Hinksey from flooding.
A planning application to get the scheme off the ground is due to be submitted later this year, after the works were delayed so a new bridge could be built on the southern section of the Oxford ring road.
Ahead of that, the consortium which is running the scheme has started to ask members of the public what they think about the plans, which have been changed slightly. ....

Hinksey flood scheme allows trains to keep running

A PROJECT to tackle flooding has allowed trains to keep running despite recent heavy rain.
The Network Rail initiative, known as the Hinksey flood alleviation scheme, saw the installation of two new culverts – tunnels carrying a stream under the railway – to allow excess water to run under the railway and prevent it from flooding.
In early 2016, work started on the £21 million scheme, to raise the height of a stretch of track underneath Old Abingdon Road.
Joanna Grew, Network Rail industry programme director, said: “We are delighted to see the positive impact the Hinksey flood alleviation scheme is having in keeping the railway free from flooding. ....
