Some improvements are on the way for a dangerous section of U.S. Highway 1 in Howard County, Maryland. The Maryland State Highway Administration said Tuesday that it has secured $3.5 million in federal funding to improve four intersections along 9 miles of the highway (also known as Washington Boulevard) from North Laurel to Elkridge. At the intersection with Brewers Court, a pedestrian-activated signal will be installed, along with protected space in the median and more-visible crosswalks. At the Guilford Road intersection, a pedestrian/cyclist path will be built along southbound U.S. 1 from Guilford to a nearby sidewalk. More-visible crosswalks and upgraded pedestrian crossing signals will also be added.

Local News Briefs: Creating careers with chalk at school Staff Report Creating careers with chalk at LMIS Fifth grade students at Larry Miller Intermediate School recently participated in Careers on the Walk. The activity allowed them to express their career interests in chalk on the sidewalk outside of the school. Representatives from the Career Development Department at Mid-East Career and Technology Centers coordinate career-related activities with students at East Muskingum throughout the school year as part of an elementary career development program. The activities were made possible through coordination with Larry Miller Intermediate teacher/Mid-East Liaison Janelle Phipps and Career Exploration Specialist Robin McQuaid. Mid-East students Luke DiVincenzo, Mason Snider, and Mateya Townsend were also on hand to assist with the activity.
The Daily Jeffersonian OLD WASHINGTON — A log truck driver was transported to Southeastern Med with multiple injuries suffered during a rollover accident on Interstate 70 Thursday afternoon. The unidentified 40-year-old driver reported suffering pain in his back, right side and shoulder. He was transported to Southeastern Med by Old Washington emergency medical personnel. The heavily-damaged truck came to rest in the median on its right side with numerous large logs strewn about. The truck struck the guardrail on the westbound side of I-70 prior to overturning. Traffic in both directions on I-70 was slowed while emergency responders worked at the scene. A second log truck was dispatched to pick up the load lost when the other truck overturned in the median.
$3.5M expansion project proposed for D.O. Hall Business Park Potential development near Old Washington discussed with Zanesville company The Daily Jeffersonian Guernsey County Community Improvement Corporation members recently learned that a $3.5 million project for expansion at the D.O. Hall Business Park in Guernsey County was submitted for funding in the upcoming Fiscal Year 2022 budget. The request by Appalachian Partnership Inc., a non-profit created to advance economic development opportunities in the region, was submitted through the office of U.S. Congressman Bill Johnson. The funding request to upgrade 44 acres at the business park on Brick Church Road south of Cambridge was announced by CIC Director Norm Blanchard during a recently meeting.
Ella V. “Sally” Bonar, 92, of Byesville, died Wednesday (May 5, 2021) at her home. She was born January 6, 1929 near Fairview, daughter of the late Charles Gray and Atha (Betts) Gray. Sally graduated from Old Washington High School in 1946. She worked at March Electric and retired in 1992 after 36 years. She was a member of the FOE #386 Auxiliary. She attended Old Washington United Methodist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Raymond Gray and Lawrence Gray; three sisters, Edith Redd, infant sister Edna, and infant sister Elsie; two half-sisters; and two half-brothers. She is survived by her husband, Neil E. Bonar, whom she married December 19, 1969; two stepchildren, David (Denise) Bonar of Trinity AL and Beverly Ann (Tom) Thompson of Wayne Lakes; two nieces, Betty (Larry) Parry of Lore City and Pam (Jamie) Rice of Warsaw; three nephews, Arthur (Eloise) Gray of Salesville, Paul Gray of Senecaville, and David Gray (Beverly Culler) of Cambridge; many great-nieces and great-nephews, including Diane (Rick) Gates of Zanesville; four step-grandsons; and several step-great-grandchildren.
