Experts pick holes in J&K's signing MoUs with NHPC for hydro power projects


Srinagar: On 4th of June 2018, Sunil Sharma the then Minister for Power in the PDP-BJP coalition government announced, “I am hosting (first-ever) global investor meet for harnessing the huge hydro power potential of J&K”.
Two-and-half years down the line no global investor has come and Kashmir “scandalously” remains one of the energy-deprived hotspots in the subcontinent.
Interestingly, the water resources of the erstwhile state continue exclusively to be kept open for exploitation by National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC), a profitable hydropower public sector enterprise of the Government of India.
Instead of following a policy of creating its indigenous hydle power assets, the rulers have religiously followed a “guide book” of endowing the water resources of Jammu and Kashmir to the NHPC. ....

Grievances redressal panel visits Keru HEP in JK's Kishtwar to resolve public issues

A Grievances Redressal Committee (GRC) on Sunday visited the site of 624 MW Keru Hydro Electricity Project (HEP) in Jammu and Kashmir s Kishtwar district to resolve the issues of locals, an official spokesman said.
The residents raised several grievances like seeking preference to local youths during recruitment in the project, payment of pending compensation under Resettlement and Rehabilitation (R&R) Plan, water supply scheme for adjoining hamlets and a protection wall along the link road to Keru project site, the spokesman said.

Responding to the grievances, Assistant Commissioner Revenue Amir Hussain assured them that 80:20 ratio of locals and non-locals would be ensured in the recruitment process at all stages. Various components of the R&R plan were also discussed and participants were informed that water crisis, payment of pending compensation and construction of a pro ....
