Kia has reportedly sold more cars than Honda in consecutive months: December 2020 and January 2021.
It can be said that the Korean auto giant is trying to change the status quo as Pakistan’s auto market has traditionally been dominated by Toyota, Honda, and Suzuki, known as the Japanese ‘big three’.
“We have sold more cars than Honda for two consecutive months,” said Muhammad Faisal, the Kia Lucky Motors COO. “Our numbers were higher in December and January.” ....

Ever since Karl Benz invented the world’s first motor car in 1886 – the Benz Patent-Motorwagen – the automotive industry has come a long way. From hi-tech Hondas and Chryslers to electric Teslas and Nios, the global industry contributes roughly three percent to all GDP output. Due to the pandemic, however, worldwide car sales have taken a hit and are expected to fall from $74.9 million in 2019 to under $62 million in 2020, according to Statista.
Industry Overview
In Pakistan, the automotive industry, which contributes 2.8% to the country’s GDP (source: Invest Pakistan), has faced a cycle of booms and busts since the 2000s. In fact, the auto industry was on a downward trend before Covid-19 struck, primarily due to rising taxes (Federal Excise Duty increased from 2.5% to 7.5% and Additional Customs Duty by seven percent) and the rupee’s deprecia ....

KARACHI: The auto sector in the first seven months of the current fiscal year (7MFY21) registered brisk growth, posting an increase of 18 per cent in car sales, 137pc in jeeps, 32pc in pickups, 12pc in Fiat and 84pc in Massey Ferguson tractors and 18pc in two- or three-wheelers. The only exception were heavy vehicles which posted negative sales.
According to data released by the Pakistan Automotive Manufacturers Association (PAMA), total car sales stood at 81,569 units in 7MFY21 versus 69,189 units in the same period last fiscal. Car sales in Jan 2021 sales increased to 14,543 units as compared to 10,095 units in Jan 2020. ....
