Before moving Thursday into social housing in the nearby Downtown Eastside, Berg spent most of the past year sleeping in Strathcona Park. She won’t miss it.
The order issued earlier this month by Vancouver park board general manager Donnie Rosa listed Friday at 10 a.m. as the deadline for all tents and structures to be removed from Strathcona. But none of the people involved expected anything dramatic to happen at 10:01 a.m. No court injunction is currently in place, but that is a future possibility if people refuse offers of housing and remain in the park. ....

With a deadline looming to clear Strathcona Park, Vancouver Mayor Kennedy Stewart said housing will be available for everybody leaving the encampment.
Stewart said he was informed by B.C. Housing Minister David Eby that he is confident there will be housing available to those who need it.

City of Vancouver buys Best Western Kingsway hotel for homeless housing

This 1996-built, four-storey building on a 10,000 sq ft lot contains 69 guest rooms. Following renovations later this spring and summer, it will have 68 units for individuals experiencing or at risk of homelessness.
The acquisition value was not disclosed. According to BC Assessment, the property’s assessed value is $14.3 million, with $10.03 million from the land and $4.25 million from the structure. The site is within very close proximity to SkyTrain’s future Mount Pleasant Station.

The municipal government acquired Best Western Plus Uptown using a portion of the $51.5 million in grant funding from the federal government’s Rapid Housing Initiative. This fund was also tapped for the city’s previously announced acquisition of Days Inn by Wyndham Vancouver Metro Hotel at 2075 Kingsway ....
