Nineteen
pedestrian subways which are unfit for public use are finally getting some attention. Besides promising to regularly maintain these important pedestrian pathways, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (
BBMP) has initiated steps to deploy home guards in two shifts to ensure pedestrians, particularly women, feel safe to use the subway. So far subways are perceived as open toilets or a haven for drunks and sex workers.
It’s also the first time the civic body is using home guards to man the subways. Officials believe the well-trained professionals would do a better job than the personnel deployed by the private service providers. “The guards will be posted on both sides of the subway in two shifts between 7am and 10pm. Their presence will definitely boost the confidence of pedestrians including women and children to use the subway,” a senior BBMP official said. ....

Greater Shepparton City Council advises the community of upcoming roadworks scheduled in Mooroopna from 15 February until mid-April, 2021 between the hours of 7am to 7pm weather permitting.
Works will occur in:
Alexandra/Morrell Streets – Thoroughfare access via Alexandra Street and Morrell Street.
Northgate/ Ann Streets – Thoroughfare access via Northgate Street and Ann Street.
Ann/ Morrell Streets – Thoroughfare access via Ann Street and Morrell Street.
The works include installation of splitter islands to improve pedestrian safety under the Safe Travel in Local Streets program. Access to businesses and residences adjacent to the works will be maintained.
Council requests that Motorists be aware of changed conditions and take additional care when travelling in this area during the works. ....

Police are seeking assistance to identify two truck drivers who may have vital information as they investigate the death of a pedestrian killed at Midgee early Monday morning.
Officers were called to the Bruce Highway, near the intersection of Moglino Road around 1.40am after the body of a man was located on the side of the highway.
The man’s car was parked a short distance up the road.
Investigators believe the 38-year-old man was struck by a passing vehicle and the drivers of the two trucks identified could assist with investigations. ....

SAN ANTONIO – A woman was hit and killed while attempting to cross an access road of Loop 410 on the city’s West Side late Monday night, San Antonio police said.
The crash happened around 10:20 p.m. in the 6800 block of Northwest Loop 410 near Alamo Downs Parkway, not far from Culebra Road.
According to police, the unidentified woman was crossing the access road on the eastbound side not in a crosswalk when a black 2007 Hyundai Tucson traveling northeast struck her. The woman hit was pronounced dead at the scene. ....
