Here Are the States That Want to Ban Trans Surgeries for Minors

At least 16 states have taken action to ban doctors from performing transgender surgeries and procedures on minors.
Arkansas became the first state to ban the surgeries and procedures for minors when the Legislature overrode Republican Gov. Asa Hutchinson’s veto of the Save Adolescents From Experimentation Act.
Polling conducted by the conservative think tank The Heritage Foundation found that 57% of Americans oppose allowing minors with gender dysphoria to receive gender transition surgery, puberty blockers, or cross-sex hormones. ....

Todayâs transphobia is yesterdayâs homophobia.
While homophobia is of course still alive and well, much of the transphobia that is spouted these days is in many ways rehashed arguments against gay and lesbian cisgender people in recent decades.
Being transgender was only removed from the World Health Organizationâs classification of mental disorders as recently as 2019, and it wasnât until 2013 when the American Psychiatric Association appropriately renamed âgender identity disorderâ to âgender dysphoria.â
Compare this to how homosexuality was declassified from being a mental disorder by the APA in 1973 and the WHO in 1990.
Or we can talk about how cis lesbians in locker rooms was once public discourse for fear they would prey on cis straight women. Sounds a lot like the arguments against trans women in public restrooms. ....

Georgia lawmaker targets doctors who help transgender children

A Georgia lawmaker who compared transgender people to moose introduced legislation that would imprison doctors who provide gender-affirming care to trans youth.
The bill from state Rep. Ginny Ehrhart, a Republican from Marietta, is the third anti-trans proposal filed by lawmakers in February. The two others are aimed at trans athletes in schools and colleges.
Ehrhart introduced House Bill 401 – titled the Vulnerable Child Protection Act – on Feb. 10. The measure would prohibit licensed medical professionals from giving hormone treatments to or performing gender affirmation surgery on people under the age of 18 “for the purpose of attempting to affirm the minor’s perception of such minor’s sex, if that perception is inconsistent with such minor’s sex,” according to the bill. ....
