A man who has been charged with murdering his wife and another woman inside their Taft Street apartment did so in front of two young children who led Boston Police to the dying women on Sunday afternoon, according to a Suffolk County prosecutor.
Marcus Chavis, 34, was charged with two counts of murder on Monday during his arraignment in Dorchester district court and ordered to be held without bail in the stabbing deaths of his 28-year-old wife, Fatima Yasin, and her roommate, 42-year-old Jahaira DeAlto. ....

Service dog joins Waukesha County Victim Witness Assistance Program

WAUKESHA - Despite her name, Pepper has what safely can be called a sweet disposition.
Surrounded by a score of criminal justice students Monday at Waukesha County Technical College in Pewaukee, Pepper enthusiastically made the rounds, greeting each student, checking out each bystander and generally settling down in the middle of the crowd on hand to meet her.
What s more, she loves kids, her handler said.
It s that disposition, along with the ability to respond to 60 canine commands, that makes her an ideal trained companion and an important new part of Waukesha County s Victim Witness Assistance program, officials say.
We are excited to say that we have hired a very good girl, said Jennifer Dunn, director of the victim witness program and Pepper s handler for its facility dog component several years in the making. More importantly, she is calm and gentle and loves attention, especially from children. ....

The San Luis Obispo County District Attorney s Office has a new staff member dedicated to comforting witnesses and victims of crime.
Edgar is a three-year-old yellow Lab and Golden Retriever mix from Canine Companions for Independence.
The DA s Office says Edgar s specific duty will be to provide peace and calm at the Christopher G. Money Victim Witness Assistance Center.
He is also trained to assist clients with special needs.
Officials say a dog like Edgar would typically cost about $50,000 but Canine Companions provided him at no cost. ....

Prosecutors drop charges in 1995 double murder

Cook County prosecutors Friday dropped charges against a man who was convicted in a 1995 double gang-related murder that claimed the lives of two teenage girls on the Southwest Side.
Nicholas Morfin, now 45, spent more than two decades in prison for the deadly shooting of Carrie Hovel and Helena Martin, both 13.
The girls were killed after 15-year-old Eric Anderson, the son of a Chicago police officer, fired at a rival gang’s van.
Morfin was accused of helping plan the attack.
Ultimately, Morfin had not proved his innocence, Judge Arthur Hill Jr. said Friday. But the judge added he was vacating Morfin’s conviction and granting him a new trial on the basis prosecutors withheld evidence that could have exonerated Morfin during his initial trial. ....
