Canada supports safer supply project for people with opioid use disorder in Guelph

Today, on behalf of the Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Health, Member of Parliament Lloyd Longfield announced more than $1 million over two years for a safer supply project in Guelph. This innovative project will provide a pharmaceutical alternative to the toxic illegal drug supply and help prevent overdoses.

The overdose crisis continues to affect communities and families across Canada. Tragically, we have seen substantial increases in overdose deaths and related harms during the COVID-19 pandemic, including in Ontario where overdoses deaths increased significantly since the onset of the pandemic. The Government of Canada continues to support increasing access to safer supply projects in communities across Canada to help prevent drug overdoses during the pandemic and beyond. ....

On Christmas Day, Jess Lamb needed three injectable vials of naloxone to revive her partner from a fentanyl overdose in their home.
The next day, when Patrick  Evans experienced an overdose again, it took three nasal sprays and one injection by Lamb to save their life.
“I was too scared to call 911 for the second overdose. I didn’t know what would happen to him,” said Lamb on the phone from the couple’s home in Cranbrook. ....

One of the three stood up and stepped towards me, the tension in his shoulders easing. He said someone else had just come through the alley, filming everything on his phone without saying a word, and it pissed him off.
“So what’s this story you’re working on?” the guy asked. I explained a little more about the issue, and that I was looking for people who had accessed safer-supply prescription narcotics, or might want to.
The man, who declined to give me his name, said he hoped to get on the program soon, because the street drug supply he relied on was so dangerous. I asked if I could make a few photos of the three of them. ....
