Legislation Coming To Strengthen Citizen Safety And Security – Jamaica Information Service


National Security Minister, Hon. Dr. Horace Chang, will be piloting several pieces of legislation in the House of Representatives that are critical in bolstering public safety and citizen security.
Key among these are the Criminal Justice Suppression of Criminal Organisations (Amendment) Bill, 2021 (Anti-Gang Bill); the Firearms Licensing Act; amendments to the Trafficking In Persons Act; the Corrections Act; and regulations for the Major Organised Crime and Anti-Corruption Agency (MOCA).
Dr. Chang provided details during his 2021/22 Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives on Tuesday (May 25), under the theme ‘Plan, Secure Jamaica… Towards Safer Communities’.
He said that debate on amendments to the Anti-Gang Bill, which was tabled on April 27, will get under way on Wednesday (May 26), while the Firearms Act will be brought to Parliament in a few weeks. ....

Multi-billion dollar crime fight: Gov't bullish on Plan Secure Jamaica

Government is projecting to spend up to US$1.2 billion (J$176 billion) to fight crime under Plan Secure Jamaica over seven years between 2016 and 2023, according to National Security Minister Dr Horace Chang.
It s a big price tag for crimefighting in the island which now has the dubious distinction of being ranked the murder capital of the Latin America and Caribbean region.
Speaking during a ministerial statement in the House of Representatives on Tuesday, Chang said the projected medium term spend to strengthen the country’s national security architecture between 2016/17 and 2022/23 is US$346.7 million. However, he cautioned that because of the major fallout in the economy as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, these figures may be revisited. ....
