SLAYTON University of Minnesota Extension, along with Minnesota Beef Council, will host several online Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) and Secure Beef Supply (SBS) training sessions between February and April.
Producers only need to attend one of the free workshops to receive a three-year BQA certification. They will also learn the steps needed to begin their own Secure Beef Supply plan.
BQA certification is required by many major industry buyers and processors, though it is still voluntary for producers to complete. However, when a producer does not have current BQA certification, the result is that many packers and feedlots simply cannot purchase those cattle because their company cannot source cattle from a producer who does not meet their certification requirements. ....

Activities set in preparation for foreign animal disease introduction

HELENA The Montana Department of Livestock continues to prepare for a foreign animal disease FAD introduction into the state.
The Animal Health Bureau AHB and the Montana Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory MVDL were recently awarded funding by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’ Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service to increase practical livestock biosecurity measures and address needs related to receiving, testing and reporting diagnostic test results, respectively.
The AHB was awarded more than $29,000 to conduct.

New Tool Helps producers Develop Custom Biosecurity Plan for Disease

In support of cattle producers across the country dedicated to preventing disease, improving animal welfare and reducing production losses, the Beef Checkoff-funded Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) program developed a Daily Biosecurity Plan for Disease Prevention template. The template, which helps cattle producers implement daily biosecurity measures on their operations, is available digitally as a PDF or can be printed for handwritten plans.
The template was specifically designed to be customizable, giving producers flexibility in determining management practices that work best for their cattle operation and covers everything from animal movement to worker training. The goal of this introductory and stepwise program is to provide beef farmers and ranchers across the country with the information needed to implement biosecurity plans.
