An Australian fishery consultancy, which has taken a financial hit from the fallout of the failed Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification of the orange roughy fishery, claims the MSC’s reputation may be damaged in the country by the certification s failure.
“Just as MSC was about to take a step forward in Australia it takes several backwards and will become less relevant,” Simon Boag, a fisheries advisor at Australian-based Atlantis Fisheries Consulting Group – which was engaged by a number of orange roughy east quota owners to seek MSC accreditation – said. ....

Discrepancies In Official Trade Data Suggest Illegal International Trade In Endangered Hammerhead Shark Fins

Humane Society
International (HSI) has found.
The report
found that across several years, the amounts of fins
recorded as exported from Australia were less than that
reported by countries receiving the fins and in some cases,
the discrepancy was reversed.
The report also found no
record of the associated shark meat in the export data which
raises the question of where this meat is ending
up.
Based on the report s comprehensive investigation,
both AMCS and HSI state that the Australian Government needs
to urgently review its recording and monitoring of the shark
product trade, including conducting a long-overdue review of ....

The battle for the ‘roughy has been a tough road for conservationists and hopefully, this win will be the last fight.
An appeal by the fishing industry to overturn a ruling on the sustainability of fishing for a long-lived Australian fish – the orange roughy – has failed following a long battle for science and Australian environmental laws to be respected.
An independent adjudicator threw out the appeal by consultants hired by the fishing industry – MRAG Americas. It means the orange roughy cannot be certified as sustainable by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) because it is a protected species, listed as ‘Conservation Dependent’ under Australian law. ....
