WESTFIELD A proposal to improve military spouses’ job prospects could also boost Barnes Air National Guard Base’s prospects with the Department of Defense.
Legislation filed by Sen. John Velis would cut down on certain licensing requirements for service members and their spouses seeking to use their out-of-state credentials in Massachusetts. It would also expedite the enrollment of their children in Massachusetts schools.
Such a move could help make the Westfield military base a top choice for federal investments, like the next-generation F-35A Lightning II fighter jets that Barnes is on the short list to receive. ....

DOD announces grants that will help military spouses

The Department of Defense announced Friday the approval of a series of grants that will help military spouses with the issue of professional license portability.
Through a cooperative agreement with the Council of State Governments, grants will allow selected professions to work with CSG’s National Center for Interstate Compacts to develop model interstate occupational licensure compact legislation, addressing license portability affecting transitioning military spouses, along with other practitioners in the profession.
The five selected professions are teaching, social work, cosmetology, massage therapy, and dentistry/dental hygiene.
This is the first time the department has provided this kind of grant. ....

MAXWELL AIR FORCE BASE, Ala.
Soon it will be easier for military parents assigned to Maxwell-Gunter AFB to identify schools that support their children’s needs before ever setting foot on base through the new Purple Star School Program. Last month, Alabama was the 13th state to pass legislation establishing a Purple Star Schools Program and Committee. According to the resolution, the program will recognize public K-12 schools that are especially committed to the successful transition and support of military students and their families.
“The Purple Star Schools Program shows Alabama’s continued support to military communities across the state,” said Lt. Gen. James Hecker, Air University commander and president. “We are thankful to the Military Stability Commission, who championed this K-12 recognition program to help military parents ....
