He’s also been announcing things like lifting COVID restrictions and suing to let cruise lines start operating again. What the governor did in Palm Beach County was to have an invitation-only signing ceremony for his big election-reform package. That’s right, the man who said Florida’s voting processes ran so well last November got the Republican Legislature to adopt a package of changes, defying that old management edict, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” He was promptly sued by liberal groups who see the plan as aimed mostly at making it harder to vote for those who are unlikely to vote Republican. ....
BOYNTON BEACH More than a decade after a Boynton Beach mother sued the city when police arrested her for filming them, a state appeals court has ruled against her. City police in 2009 had the right to arrest Tasha Ford, the three-panel judge said Wednesday in a 2-1 ruling, for “obstruction” of their duties when she recorded them after they cuffed her son for sneaking into a movie theater. The judges’ decision upholds a Palm Beach County Circuit Court ruling. Ford “failed to comply with the officers’ direction and requests,” Judges Melanie May and Edward Artau wrote. Alcee Hastings will be filled through a special election, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced Tuesday. Speaking at a news conference Tuesday, DeSantis said the primary for the District 20 seat will be held on Nov. 2, with the general election on Jan. 11, 2022. ....
Just three other men have won election as governor of their home states as members of both the Democratic and Republican parties. Crist, who won the governorship as a Republican in 2006, is trying to be the fourth. He would follow in the footsteps of Mills Godwin, the first person to lead a state under both parties’ banners. ADVERTISEMENT Godwin won election in Virginia in 1965 as a Democrat, backed by influential Sen. Harry Byrd, a conservative Democrat who ran the commonwealth’s dominant political machine in the middle decades of the 20th century. But Godwin was the last in his line as Byrd’s power faded. He was replaced four years later, forced out of office by Virginia’s one-term limit on governors, by Republican Linwood Holton, the first non-Democrat to run the state since William Cameron won election in 1881 as a Readjuster. ....
