Johnson City Chamber lists building for $495,000


Having called it home since its construction in 1978, the Johnson City/Jonesborough/Washington County Chamber of Commerce is now selling its building on East Market Street for $495,000.
The building, at 603 E. Market St., was placed on the market on June 21. Chamber CEO Bob Cantler said he hopes the organization will move to its new home on the first floor of the Model Mill by the end of the year.
Cantler said the Chamber is currently working with Thomas Weems Architects to get its new space move-in ready. The buildout could take three to four months.
“It will be a state-of-the-art destination,” Cantler said. ....

Chamber looking to attract young professionals to the region


Bob Cantler, the president and CEO of the Chamber of Commerce of Johnson City/Jonesborough/Washington County, says both his organization and its more than 500 members have learned how to adapt during the pandemic.
“Our values haven’t changed, but our strategy has been altered,” Cantler said. “Our biggest question now is: What does post-COVID-19 look like for our businesses?”
He said the business organization is definitely “not your Dad’s Chamber.”
Cantler said one of the Chamber’s top goals now is to “re-engage for the future.” That means taking lessons learned from the pandemic and apply them as the business community moves forward. ....

Dec. 11, 1890: The Comet carried exciting news about Johnson City’s Steam Laundry. “The Steam Laundry has been removed into new quarters on West Market street and is ready for business. New machinery has been added and Geo. R. Brown, the proprietor, will spare no pains to make it first class in every particular. The wagon will call regularly for laundry hereafter. Orders from a distance will receive prompt attention. In connection with the laundry, Mr. Brown has fited (sic) up bath rooms but they are not open yet. In a few days, however, all will be ready and both hot and cold baths can be had at all hours in elegant and convenient apartments. The laundry is on West Market near Boone street.” ....
