TORONTO – Pam Parks says she has a routine to pick herself up before she starts every one of her 12-hour hospital shifts these days.
The registered practical nurse drives the five minutes to work at an Oshawa, Ont., hospital with her car radio turned up and sings along in a bid to lift her spirits.
She tries to take her mind, ever so briefly, off the stress, uncertainty and large workload that awaits her in the emergency room that day, as the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic rages.
Even after 33 years in the profession, Parks said the pandemic has opened her eyes to the fragility of our health care system and the distress both she and her fellow nurses feel. ....

Winter weather delivers blow to plant life


It was just as difficult for people’s plants.
Vegetation was especially vulnerable during a nearly weeklong stretch in which temperatures dropped below freezing on a nightly basis. So there was little that could have been done to salvage decorative outdoor plants and residential gardens at a time when many Houstonians had recently planted fruits and vegetables in anticipation of the upcoming spring.
“I have friends I know who have huge yards with extensive landscaping,” said Pam Parks, the beautification chair for the Garden Oaks Civic Club. “They’ve lost thousands of dollars’ worth of plants.”
The frigid weather was equally problematic for the businesses that help area residents with their gardening needs. Buchanan’s Native Plants at 611 E. 11th St. lost about $50,000 worth of plants, or roughly 10 percent of its inventory, according to operations manager David Alvarado. ....
