Serpent River First Nation holds huge demonstration on Canada Day

The demonstration was organized by SRFN resident Catrina Owl and other community members. It was perhaps the largest demonstration ever seen on the North Shore. Scores of people from many communities took part showing their support. Most of those attending were wearing orange shirts or clothing.

Traffic was slowed for two hours to educate others and ask them to reflect on, as well as acknowledge the recent discoveries of children buried in unmarked graves at several former residential school sites. SRFN sits about nine kilometres from what was the largest two residential schools in Ontario. Many First Nation children in the province attended these schools, as well as many others from Quebec and Manitoba First Nations. The shell of the former St. Joseph’s School for Girls stands gutted and overgrown on Garnier Road, walking distance from the Spanish Municipal Marina.
The site is privately owned but the gate to the property is open; those who have come to mourn and pay their respects have hung medicine bags and wooden medallions on the fence and laid children’s shoes at the base of the structure on crumbling brick and concrete.
