Beware! Google Play Store removes fake Netflix-like app after it spread malware

A fake Netflix app on Google Play Store targeted to spread malware by automatically responding to WhatsApp messages. However, now Google has taken down the app that goes by the name FlixOnline.
As per the security firm Check Point Research, the FlixOnline app sported a Netflix-like look to trick users. Not just that, it also promised two months of free subscription to users through WhatsApp messages.
The app offering a free subscription shared a link that redirected users to a website to just capture their personal data including credit card details. Many Android users downloaded the fake app confusing it with Netflix. ....

Researchers at Check Point Research (CPR) on Wednesday said they recently discovered a new and innovative malicious malware on the Google Play Store which spreads itself via mobile users’ WhatsApp conversations and can also send further malicious content via automated replies to incoming WhatsApp messages.
This unique method enables threat actors to distribute phishing attacks, spread false information or steal credentials and data from users’ WhatsApp accounts, and more.
Called ‘FlixOnline’, the app is a fake service that claims to allow users to view Netflix content from all around the world on their mobiles for free. However, instead of allowing the mobile user to view Netflix content, the app monitors the user’s WhatsApp notifications and sends automatic replies to incoming messages using content that it receives from a remote command and control (C&C) server. ....

Hacking campaigns reveal Iranian attacks on dissidents

They said these operations have targeted over 1,200 people and remain active. The Iran-backed groups target peoples’ mobile phones and PCs with sophisticated spyware to collect sensitive data, including call recordings, messages, and locations.
One group, known as APT-C-50 or “Domestic Kitten,” spies on dissidents’ mobile phones, tricking people into downloading malicious software under the guise of popular apps. Victims included internal dissidents, opposition forces, ISIS advocates, people in the Kurdish minority in Iran, and more.
According to the researchers, hackers lured victims into installing a malicious application through multiple vectors, including an Iranian blog site, Telegram channels, and an SMS with a link to the malicious application. The malware planted could record calls, track locations, steal media videos and photos, and more. ....
