Repairs Planned for Iowa Train Depot Damaged in Derecho

Officials in Marion, Iowa are set to approve a plan to repair the city’s historic train depot that was heavily damaged in last summer’s devastating derecho.
The Marion City Council received a motion this week from the city’s Parks and Recreation department to approve a contract for the repairs, The Gazette in Cedar Rapids reported. The council is expected to approve the contract at Thursday’s formal session.
The depot was built in 1892 and moved to City Square Park in 1990. The structure’s northside roof was smashed by a fallen tree during the Aug. 10 derecho, which brought winds of more than 100 mph to eastern Iowa and damaged many buildings and trees in a multi-state region and killed three people in Iowa. ....

Train Depot In Marion To Be Repaired Following Derecho
A fixture in Marion Square Park that was damaged by the August derecho will be repaired by this summer. The historic train depot building seen above in much better condition, was originally constructed in 1892. It was moved to the park in 1990.
The Cedar Rapids Gazette reports that the Marion City Council at its Tuesday meeting was presented a motion to approve repairs to the structure, with a contract with Point Builders. The Cedar Rapids company was the only one who put in a bid on the project.
The roof and several of the building s columns are from the initial construction back in 1892. The columns were saved during derecho cleanup. The roof on the building s northside was taken out by a tree during the derecho. The train depot was one of hundreds of buildings that saw damage in the August storm. ....

Historic train depot to receive repairs in Marion after derecho

MARION Marion’s train depot in City Square Park soon will be repaired after being heavily damaged in last August’s derecho.
At its meeting Tuesday evening, the Marion City Council was presented a motion from the city’s Parks and Recreation department to approve a contract with Point Builders for repairs.
Point Builders, located in Cedar Rapids, was the only company to bid for the contract.
The depot was built in 1892 and was moved to City Square Park in 1990, City Parks and Recreation Interim Director Seth Staashelm said.
The roof and a couple of columns are from the initial construction. The columns were identified and saved during derecho cleanup, Staashelm said. ....
