Barton Foundation purchases 30 high-tech wheelchairs for patients

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Continuing its mission of advancing local healthcare through philanthropy, the Barton Foundation has purchased 30 new high-tech wheelchairs for Barton Health, an award of $90,000. The wheelchairs have been distributed for use throughout Barton Memorial Hospital, Lake Tahoe Surgery Center, Barton Center for Orthopedics & Wellness, and the Barton Community Health Center.
Thanks to the generosity of our donors who made this purchase possible, we have replaced outdated wheelchairs with leading-edge chairs that are much more comfortable, lighter and ergonomically designed, said Chris Kiser, Barton Foundation Executive Director. Our Foundation Board of Trustees recognized a need and unanimously voted to fund this award, which has already made a positive impact at Barton.” ....

Column: Depression screenings as preventative care

Over the past 15 months, the COVID-19 pandemic quickly changed our delivery of health care. As health systems and communities focused on managing the pandemic, people began to forgo their normal preventive care. Additionally, mental health concerns due to isolation and other social changes as a result of the pandemic became apparent. Addressing mental health issues is a high priority for Barton Health and as it is frequently identified as an area of need in our Community Health Needs Assessment.
Depression screening is an important tool to bring awareness to this issue, and it is the first step in identifying a need so that patients can be connected to care. People are routinely screened for heart disease, diabetes, and cancers, as a way to detect serious illness early and start treatment as needed. Similarly, depression screenings are becoming a normal part of preventive care. ....

Substance abuse has repeatedly been recorded as a leading health concern in our community during Barton’s regularly-conducted Community Health Needs Assessments. Barton’s Medication for Addiction Treatment Program, offers treatment to individuals experiencing addiction to opioids and other substances.

Through the MAT Program, patients are treated using a whole-person approach to substance use recovery through medication, counseling and psychiatric services.
Under the care of our physicians and clinicians, patients and their families will be supported in their recovery regardless of where they are in the process.
For patients suffering from opioid use disorder (e.g. addiction to heroin or opioid pills), medications such as SuboxoneⓇ (buprenorphine) or naltrexone may be prescribed to assist with their recovery.
