Latin American, Caribbean ministers commit to build back better and greener
Bridgetown Barbados, February 2, 2021 – The Ministers of the Environment of Latin America and the Caribbean today signed the Barbados Declaration, in which they called for the integration of environmental issues to be placed at the heart of the region’s COVID-19 recovery strategies, with economic reactivation based on social inclusion, low carbon and resilient economies, and the conservation and sustainable use of natural resources.
The ministers, at the XXII Meeting of the Forum of Ministers of Environment of Latin America and the Caribbean organized by the UN Environment Porgramme (UNEP) and the Government of Barbados, agreed on a set of concrete decisions, including the establishment of a regional Action Plan to restore ecosystems, a Circular Economy Coalition, an Integrated Environmental Information System, and a second, updated Caribbean Small Island Developing States (SIDS) ....

Guyana and Suriname, member states of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), are among the few countries globally which still have significant natural forest, having 60 per cent and 91 per cent coverage, respectively. In Jamaica, 26 per cent of the island is still covered by primary forest, and there is currently an ongoing controversy about protecting the remaining natural areas, such as the Cockpit Country and the Dry Harbour Mountains, from mining activities. ....
