Dedicated volunteer receives highest honour for volunteerism



THUNDER BAY An award ceremony was held Friday to present Mona Hardy, a dedicated volunteer at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre with the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers. This prestigious national award recognizes the volunteer achievements of Canadians from across the country in a wide range of fields.
“Volunteers play such a crucial role at our Hospital, and Mona exemplifies the essential link volunteers fulfill to help ensure patients have the best experience possible when at our hospital,” said Dr. Rhonda Crocker Ellacott, President and CEO of TBRHSC, and CEO of the Thunder Bay Regional Health Research Institute. “Mona has been an extremely dedicated, long-serving volunteer, tirelessly contributing her time, gifts, skills, and energy to improving the lives of many people. Allowing a child to see the world at the eye level of adult members of their community is a moment of grace and connection for Indigenous and non-Indigenous children. Shirley Stevens, along with Caitlyn Bird, have revealed the importance of this with their new exhibit, Dakobinaawaswaan (Baby in a Cradleboard) at the Thunder Bay Art Gallery.
Shirley Stevens, from Opwaaganasiniing, Lake Helen Reserve, began collecting cradleboards after the cradleboard she used for her daughter, Cree Stevens, disappeared from a moving truck. This cradleboard was gifted to Stevens in Biinjitiwaabik Zaaging, Rocky Bay First Nation, and had carried 18 children. ....

THUNDER BAY – A growing number of communities are expressing deep concerns over a new master plan for EMS services in the Thunder Bay District, saying their objections reflect a total lack of proper consultation.
Thunder Bay’s city council voted nonetheless to receive the 10-year plan prepared by Performance Concepts Consulting Monday, though that doesn’t bind the city or Superior North EMS to implement its recommendations.
Several district municipalities and First Nations have now spoken out against the plan, particularly proposals to consolidate four district stations into two (Terrace Bay/Schreiber and Nipigon/Red Rock), and to close another in Beardmore. ....

Mining company collaborates with Thunder Bay-area First Nations


Clean Air Metals Thunder Bay North project is located about 50 km northeast of the city (Clean Air Metals Inc.)
THUNDER BAY  A company that s exploring mining claims in the Greenwich Lake and Tartan Lake area northeast of Thunder Bay says it has advanced its working relationship with three area First Nations.
Clean Air Metals Inc. hopes to develop platinum/palladium/copper/nickel deposits around its Thunder Bay North Project, about 50 kilometres from the city.
The property is accessible via logging roads branching off Highway 527, and is roughly 70 kilometres from Impala Platinum s Lac des Iles mine.
Fort William First Nation, the Red Rock Indian Band, and Biinjitiwaabik Zaaging Anishinaabek (formerly Rocky Bay First Nation) assert that the site is within their traditional territory. ....
