FIU bridge collapse was ‘catastrophe years in the making’ and changes must be made
A major overhaul of safety best practice is needed at all levels to ensure that there is not a repeat of the Florida International University (FIU) bridge collapse, according to an illustrative report compiled by the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).
The report outlines recommendations to improve best practice for engineering firms as well as suggesting reforms for national and local highways authorities.
The FIU bridge in Miami-Dade County was being constructed by Magnum Construction Management (MCM) under a design and build contract when it collapsed on to a live eight-lane road on 15 March 2018, killing six people and injuring eight others. ....
