Perk up for pollinators


Bees and other pollinators — bats, butterflies, beetles, wasps and birds, among others — play a critical role in nature and in our food production system.
According to the USDA, more than 100 different crops worth $18 billion rely on pollinators. But some pollinator populations are in rapid decline.
Colony Collapse Disorder
The Western honey bee, in particular, is vulnerable to colony’s collapse disorder, a condition that causes worker bees to disappear, leaving behind only the queen and some nursemaid bees to care for babies. The USDA says the disorder is likely the cause of stressors in the environment, such as pests, disease, pollutants, nutritional deficits and cloak of habitat. ....

There s a buzz in the air: Blackrock Tidy Towns launch programme to encourage pollinator friendly planting

Blackrock Tidy Towns have launched a programme to encourage pollinator friendly planting in local housing estates. 
Residents Associations have been notified and encouraged to select an area that they can develop to attract butterflies, bees, birds and other types of wildlife.   
A grant of €250 will be awarded to the four most successful projects submitted.
This funding has come from the Department of Rural and Community Affairs as part of the Government’s commitment to support Tidy Towns Groups in their preparation for the 2021 National Tidy Towns Competition. ....

Palouse pollinator summit planned Wednesday and Thursday


MOSCOW — A Pollinator Summit planned online by University of Idaho Extension Feb. 24 and 25 will focus on pollinators and their habitats on the Palouse and beyond.
The summit will begin Wednesday, with a youth summit from 4-5 p.m., followed by a series of short programs from experts about the current status of bees and other pollinators from 6-8 p.m. On Thursday from 2-6 p.m. experts will focus on current research and efforts to protect habitats in the future.
The summit is free and open to those who register online for individual sessions, including the youth summit. Registration is at https://palousepollinators.wixsite.com/savethebees. ....
