Plymouth Antiquarian Society to present ‘Remembering the First Peoples of Plymouth’

PLYMOUTH The Plymouth Antiquarian Society will present “Remembering the First Peoples of Plymouth” at 1 p.m. May 1 as part of its First Saturday History Tours. 
For thousands of years before European settlement, indigenous peoples called southeastern Massachusetts their home, and their descendants still live here today. Join Melissa Ferretti, chairlady/president of the Herring Pond Wampanoag Tribe, for a virtual tour of sacred places in Plymouth and Bourne, including the Pondville Meetinghouse, Little Sandy Pond Cemetery and the Dina Path burial ground.

ABILENE - The next program in the Evenings at Ease series is at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 13 that will feature guest speaker Shelly Cline who will be presenting about the rise of the Nazi party and propaganda. The event will be online via Google Meet.
Perhaps the biggest misconception of Nazi Germany is that the Nazi party came to power in a landslide victory and overwhelming wave of public support. The talk will look at the conditions of Germany in the 1920s and 1930s that made Nazism possible. It will also explore many examples of propaganda used by the Nazis to gain the support of the people for their new vision of Germany. ....

Elizabeth Lanphier is a moral philosopher and bioethicist. She earned her PhD in philosophy from Vanderbilt University and an MS degree in Narrative Medicine from Columbia University. Dr. Lanphier completed a postdoctoral clinical ethics fellowship with Vanderbilt University Medical Center, and now works as an ethicist and scholar at Cincinnati Children s Hospital Medical Center s Ethics Center, with appointments in the University of Cincinnati Philosophy Department and University of Cincinnati College of Medicine Pediatrics Department. Dr. Lanphier is additionally affiliated with the University of Cincinnati Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Department and is a non-resident research fellow at the Institute of Philosophy and Public Policy at George Mason University. ....

Tucker Lectures on Victorian Aeronauts and the History of Ballooning

Jennifer Tucker, associate professor of history and chair of the Feminist, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Department, gave a virtual talk titled “Adventures of Victorian Aeronauts” on March 28. The lecture focused on the way balloon travel changed the landscape of Victorian aviation.
The talk was hosted by Profs & Pints, an online platform for professors to give lectures that reach a wide virtual audience.
Tucker began with a historical panorama of ballooning from its origins in Enlightenment science and Romanticism, to its uses for various purposes in the 19th century. She also explored balloon fashion and follies, accidents and mishaps, deaths and discoveries, personalities and scientific uses, as well as the technologies involved. ....
