On Thursday the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens officially announced the arrival of a new southern white rhinoceros.
Kipenzi, meaning “loved one” in Swahili, was born at Zoo Tampa in 2016 and transferred to Jacksonville on March 12.
The Zoo says Kipenzi came to Jacksonville based on a breeding recommendation from the Association of Zoos & Aquariums Species. When she reaches the mature age of 6-7 years old, the Zoo says it will explore breeding options for the new female. ....

Jacksonville Zoo's new giraffe, AJ, takes over breeding challenge

AJ the breeding male giraffe made his public debut at the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens this month, two years to the day since beloved predecessor Duke passed away.
The timing was pure coincidence … but it’s a lovely tribute to Duke’s sizable legacy, said Deputy Zoo Director Dan Maloney.
Duke sired 18 offspring during his 15 years in Jacksonville and was designated an essential contributor to the Association of Zoos & Aquariums Giraffe Species Survival Plan, the cooperative breeding program of accredited zoos. Four of his offspring still reside at the local zoo: Figie, JoJo, Duke Jr. and Izzy; the others have moved to other zoos around the country. ....

Jacksonville Zoo Welcomes New Giraffe

The Jacksonville Zoo s new male giraffe, AJ, made his public debut earlier this month, exactly two years after the loss of the zoo s beloved male giraffe, Duke.
Twelve-year-old AJ came from the El Paso Zoo but was born in Disney s Animal Kingdom. He is expected to take over Duke s breeding duties. Duke helped birth 18 offspring while in Jacksonville. Duke was humanely euthanized at the age of 21 on December 11, 2018.
“It’s pure coincidence that AJ’s debut fell on the same day as Duke’s passing, but it’s a lovely tribute to Duke’s sizable legacy, said Deputy Zoo Director Dan Maloney. AJ certainly has some big hooves to fill, but all early behavioral indications lead us to believe he’s up to the task.” ....
