Anglers stuck on floating sheet of ice, snowmobiler hits power pole: DEC Forest Ranger rescues

State Forest Rangers came to the rescue recently of two ice fishermen caught on a floating ice sheet on Lake Champlain and a snowmobiler who ran into a power pole.
Those two incidents and others involving state Department of Environmental Conservation Forest Rangers took place between March 14. All information below was supplied by the DEC.

Wilderness Rescue: “On March 1 at 3 p.m., Forest Ranger assistance was requested by two DEC Environmental Conservation Police Officers and the Cumberland Head Fire Department for two anglers stranded on a floating ice sheet on Lake Champlain. Fire department personnel accessed the men from Plattsburgh with an inflatable rescue craft and brought one of the subjects safely to shore. When Forest Rangers arrived on the scene, two fire department personnel and the second angle ....

SARANAC LAKE Ashes from a wood stove had been put in a metal bucket, which was sitting in a metal wagon parked outside on the ground, up against the front porch. The bucket wasn’t covered. It was a windy day. Somehow, perhaps egged on by the wind, flames sprang up from the ash bucket in the middle of the night. The flames spread to the porch, and from there to the house.
That is what Essex County fire investigators believe caused a fire early Monday morning that killed Carol Omar, the 77-year-old woman who lived by herself in the cottage at 47 Rockledge Lane, overlooking Moody Pond. ....

This past week in the Adirondacks, the state Department of Environmental Conservation rescued fishermen from a floating ice sheet, helped an injured snowmobiler and and rescued a couple whose vehicle got stuck on a snowmobile trail.


On Mar. 1 at 3 p.m., DEC environmental conservation police officers (ECOs), DEC forest rangers and the Cumberland Head Fire Department helped two anglers stranded on a floating ice sheet on Lake Champlain in the town of Plattsburgh.
Fire department personnel accessed the men, from Plattsburgh, with an inflatable rescue craft and brought one of them safely to shore. When rangers arrived on scene, two fire department personnel and the second angler and his gear were still on the ice sheet. ECOs and rangers launched the airboat, and Ranger Glen Bronson was able to retrieve all parties and gear from the ice and bring them back to shore. ....
