Feb 3, 2021 It seems that no matter where we turn these days, we find controversy, including places such as Punxsutawney, Pa.; Marion, Ohio; and French Creek, W.Va. For on Tuesday, there was a split among the Tri-State Area’s rodent forecasters of winter weather. Punxsutawney Phil, the wiley veteran, the seer of seers, the prognosticator of all prognosticators, emerged from his burrow and saw his shadow, which means we can expect six more weeks of winter. But Buckeye Chuck, who lives just outside of Columbus, failed to see his shadow, as did French Creek Freddie, which means they say we can expect an early spring. ....

Shubenacadie Sam and Wiarton Willie did not see their shadows this morning – indicating we would see an early spring. Meanwhile, Punxsutawney Phil, the rodent featured prominently in the Bill Murray comedy Groundhog Day, and Balzac Billy in southern Alberta both saw their shadows, suggesting we may be in for six more weeks of winter. Shubenacadie Sam emerged from the den at 8am and he did NOT see a shadow. That means an early spring. If the groundhog had seen its shadow, it would mean six more weeks of winter. Groundhog Day to be celebrated virtually in 2021 Poll Yes By Stan Ashbee on January 27, 2021. Groundhog Day is a popular North American tradition observed in the United States and Canada on Feb. 2. It’s also a classic comedy starring Bill Murray. Across the U.S. and in Canada, there are many official celebratory mascots, both alive and representative of a community. In Pennsylvania, there’s Punxsutawney Phil. In Bruce County, Ontario there’s Wiarton Willie. And in Alberta, there’s Balzac Billy. Balzac Billy is the “prairie prognosticator” – he predicts weather according to present indications or signs. Balzac area residents, consisting primarily of farmers, have always depended on Billy’s weather predictions for the upcoming growing season. Billy is a gopher – however, that’s his common name. He’s really a Richardson Ground Squirrel – a common species in Alberta. Billy and his family hibernate from September to February. Balza ....
