SUMMERDALE - The Summerdale Public Building Authority and the Summerdale council both approved the bond issue of $3,135,000 for the new Summerdale Volunteer Fire Station. The station will be located at the corner of Highway 73 and Highway 32. Walcott Adams Verneuille Architects is working closely with the town and volunteer department on preliminary designs.
The town hit the market at a time with low interest rates, and locked in a rate of approximately 2.5 percent fixed for 30 years. ....

SUMMERDALE, Alabama A Florida man was arrested Monday in Summerdale after leading Sheriff’s Deputies on a high-speed chase that ended in a standoff near the Baldwin Beach Express in Summerdale.
According to Baldwin County Corrections Facility records, Joshua Errin Fuqua, 47, of Cantonment, Florida, was booked at around 9:30 p.m. Monday on misdemeanor charges of reckless endangerment, resisting arrest, obstructing government operations and attempting to elude.
It started around 2 p.m. Monday when a Sheriff’s Deputy observed a vehicle moving erratically along U.S. 90 near the Baldwin Beach Express, said Capt. Clint Cadenhead with the BCSO Investigations Command. ....

Styx River VFD firefighter awards presented at appreciation dinner

STYX RIVER, Alabama Styx River firefighters and their families gathered recently for the annual appreciation dinner and a way of thanking these dedicated volunteers for the first responder services they performed throughout the year.
Chief Courtney Dunbar welcomed the attendees and after dinner, presented the awards. Deputy Chief Hubert Dunbar and Dispatcher Alice Dunbar, both recent retirees from the department, were each honored with plaques for 40 years of service. Since the department was formed in 1980, and the couple were among the founding members, this is the first time 40-year service plaques were handed out.
Chief Courtney Dunbar, who became a junior firefighter at age 16, was awarded a plaque for 30 years’ service. Firefighter/medical Brittany Holston earned an award for five years’ service. Sister-in-law, and firefighter, Megan Estes, received the award for Holston, an RN, who was on call that evening and could not attend. ....

Texas travel giant making strides in local community

LOXLEY, Alabama Work is well underway on a project to improve the intersection at County Road 68 and the Baldwin Beach Express.
The project, which is being entirely funded and contracted through Texas-based travel center giant Buc-ee’s, is two-fold, according to Tyler Mitchell, construction manager with the Baldwin County Highway Department.
The first project, which was originally planned through the Baldwin County Highway Department, calls for the widening and resurfacing of County Road 68, including the installation of extra turn lanes, Mitchell said, while the second project, originally planned through the Alabama Department of Transportation, calls for the modification of traffic lights at the intersection to add turn signals. ....
