If you walk around the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Mall these days, especially during the week, you can see that many of its businesses are struggling. 
“There is no traffic in this mall. This is not how a mall right now should be looking,” says Malik Muhammad, who has owned and operated Malik’s Books at the Crenshaw Mall since the early 1990s.

There’s a bold plan in LA’s Crenshaw neighborhood to purchase the local mall for north of $100 million and let the community profit from its redevelopment. The idea has a lot of support from business owners and residents. But the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Mall’s owners, lenders, and some community leaders aren’t convinced.
“When someone comes in from the outside and [has] a completely different agenda, it might not be what’s best for the neighborhood,” says Malik Muhammad, who has owned and operated Malik’s Books at the Crenshaw Mall since the early 1990s. “It might be a plan to gentrify, uproot and push [us] out. … We need to develop our own communities.” ....

Mothers In Action in collaboration with the LA Urban League, Brotherhood Crusade, FEMA, Cal OES and others have been working tirelessly to bring the much-needed Johnson & Johnson Vaccine to the Crenshaw Community.  The site, which on March 11, ensured that the African American community would have access and equity to the vaccine and within their own community, has been operating a vaccination site at the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Mall for the past four weeks. On Wednesday, March 31, the testing site, which has been considered a “pilot program” site, hit a milestone of 10,000 shots to community members. The Johnson & Jo ....

100 Years After Tulsa Massacre, Black Property Investment Has Never Recovered
A century ago, the Greenwood District in Tulsa, Oklahoma, was a mecca for Black entrepreneurs and business people looking to expand their investments, including into residential and commercial real estate. The 40-acre district became known as Black Wall Street, and at this moment 100 years ago, it was close to its peak.

But on May 31, 1921, a horde of White Oklahomans, angered by the success of the prosperous Black community, tore through the neighborhood, killing at least 75 people and destroying $1.5M in property, equivalent to over $20M in today’s dollars. Despite the loss, the Black community built the neighborhood back up again into the 1940s, when hundreds of Black-owned businesses thrived again.  ....
