As the world wakes up to climate change realities, Limerick is becoming a “lighthouse city”, according to Rosie Webb, head of urban innovation at Limerick City and County Council.
In 2018, the city won €6.5 million in funding spread over five years, as part of a new EU smart cities project.
In winning this grant, Limerick was deemed the first Irish ‘lighthouse smart city’, which would develop and test integrated innovative solutions at district scale and act as advisers for its region and other cities and regions across Europe. ....

‘Energy-positive’ projects to kick off in Limerick

SIX so-called ‘energy-positive’ projects are to kick off in Limerick this summer following an open call for novel ideas in the Georgian neighbourhood.
The Positive City Exchange project is working to develop areas of “positive energy” in the centre.
This means schemes which can produce more energy than they actually consume.
Limerick City and County Council is a lead partner on the programme alongside Trondheim in Norway and is funded by the EU Horizon 2020 programme.
One of the funded projects, ‘Greening the Smart Grid’, a collaboration between the Urban Coop, Community Power and Clean Tech Energy will be using a solar powered microgrid to extend the growing season on local allotments. ....

Hunt on for Limerick's Positive Energy Champions

Limerick City and County Council is on the hunt for Positive Energy Champions for Limerick.
Twenty-four individuals or representatives of community groups, NGOs, businesses, and institutions will be responsible for helping realise Limerick s positive energy pontential as part of a European funded programme, the +CityxChange (Positive City Exchange).
People from all walks of life who are happy to share their experiences on consuming less energy are invited to get involved.
The deadline for applications is Monday March 29th, 2021 at 5pm.
The +CityxChange project focuses on the Georgian Neighbourhood so applications from people who live, work, or own a building in the Georgian Neighbourhood are particularly welcomed. ....
