COVID-19 spiking among Itasca kids, younger adults


To date, half of Itasca County area residents age 16 and older have been vaccinated against COVID-19. The vaccines have been shown they are preventing serious illness and death among residents. They are available at no cost at most area hospitals, clinics and pharmacies.  
A special Moderna vaccination clinic for those 18 and older will be held Saturday, April 24 at the IRA Civic Center in Grand Rapids, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.  Walk-ins are welcome, although appointments are encouraged.  Call 218-327-6784 for assistance with registration or questions.  Online registrations may be done through a link at the county’s website: https://www.co.itasca.mn.us. ....

in School
In 1904, the Deer River School consisted of about three dozen students.  In February, the sixth graders were assigned to write an essay about President Lincoln. Two were selected to be printed in the newspaper.
Roy Belcher’s essay was about a half a column and here is the first paragraph.
“Not long after the Boones crossed the mountains to Kentucky, a man by the name of Abraham Lincoln followed their example and brought his wife and children with him.  The Lincolns and Boones were of the same class of people.  They were hardy pioneers always seeking a new country. This Abraham Lincoln was grandfather of President Abraham Lincoln, who was born in a log-cabin in Kentucky, February 12, 1809.”  ....

Itasca County marks one year of COVID


Minnesota’s first case of COVID-19 was identified on March 6, 2020.  Since then, Itasca County has seen 3,141 cases, 46 deaths, 221 hospitalizations, 49 intensive care unit stays, and 9,297 first vaccinations. 
“What a year,” said Kelly Chandler, Itasca County Public Health division manager.  “We did not know in March 2020 how COVID spread; now we know it is primarily airborne.  We know that good hygiene, including hand washing, is important, but even more important is masking to prevent the droplets carrying the virus from spreading to others.
“A year ago, we did not know that you could spread COVID prior to showing symptoms.  Now we know you can spread it two days prior to showing symptoms or even without showing symptoms at all. ....
