in School
In 1904, the Deer River School consisted of about three dozen students.  In February, the sixth graders were assigned to write an essay about President Lincoln. Two were selected to be printed in the newspaper.
Roy Belcher’s essay was about a half a column and here is the first paragraph.
“Not long after the Boones crossed the mountains to Kentucky, a man by the name of Abraham Lincoln followed their example and brought his wife and children with him.  The Lincolns and Boones were of the same class of people.  They were hardy pioneers always seeking a new country. This Abraham Lincoln was grandfather of President Abraham Lincoln, who was born in a log-cabin in Kentucky, February 12, 1809.”  ....

Itasca County in race against COVID variant

All three COVID-19 vaccines are now flowing through Itasca County’s network of health care facilities, pharmacies and public health clinics in a local race against variant-fueled spread of the coronavirus.
Over the past seven days, 71 new cases of COVID-19 were identified among Itasca County residents, following 108 identified the previous week.  The 14-day rate per 10,000 Itasca residents is 42.
“It is clear that the highly contagious B.1.1.7 variant is blooming in our county, especially among younger residents,” said Kelly Chandler, Itasca County Public Health division manager.  “Thankfully, we also have vaccines available to all residents 16 and older.  In addition to protecting against hospitalization and death, vaccines offer assurance of a more normal spring and summer. I recommend getting vaccinated whenever and wherever you can, as soon as possible.” ....

HELENA — Montana’s main budget bill is one step closer to final approval, after the state Senate passed House Bill 2 on Thursday.
The Senate spent about four hours going through and debating their own version of the bill, which lays out $12.6 billion in state spending for the next two years. HB 2 passed 34-16 in a preliminary vote, then senators suspended the rules and immediately passed it in a final vote, 33-17.
“I’m pleased with the work that was done, the negotiations that took place with the second floor, the agreements that were reached between the minority and the majority party and with the House,” said Senate Majority Leader Sen. Cary Smith, a Republican from Billings. ....
