As you drive north on US 93 through the valley, you notice a little less smoke, especially as you reach Lolo and Missoula. The reason is most of the smoke in the mid-valley is coming from the 9,500-acre Storm Creek Fire just over the border in the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness in Idaho. That fire is approaching the Bitterroot National Forest.
Public Affairs Officer Tod McKay said the forest is starting Thursday to post local fire maps and daily updates throughout Ravalli County as the fire season continues. Fire Danger Causes Stage 2 Bitterroot Forest Restrictions
Two weeks ago, the Bitterroot National Forest moved up to Very High fire danger. Less than a week later, they moved to Extreme fire danger. And only a few days later, on Saturday, July 17, Stage 2 Fire Restrictions will start on the forest.
Tod McKay, Public Affairs Officer, reported the Bitterroot forest has never reached Extreme conditions and Stage 2 restrictions this early in the fire season. For instance, the Stage 2 level has not been reached since August of 2018, three years ago. In fact, the forest jumped over Stage 1 restrictions right into Stage 2 because of the incredibly dry conditions. The restrictions include the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness in Montana and the Anaconda-Pintler wilderness on the eastern side of the Bitterroot Valley. Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness areas in Idaho are not included in this ruling. For other Montana restrictions check this website. ....

Forest fires throughout the U.S. can be initially attacked from the air. Until recently, smokejumpers would jump to a safe area near the fire and hike to it. Another way is have two firefighters rappel down long lines from a hovering helicopter to the ground near the fire.. And, the rappel crews are also used for large fire support, hazard incidents and other operations on the forest service, according to Tod McKay of the Bitterroot National Forest.
But, the rappellers need training. So, 62 veteran rappellers, with two helicopters, will be coming to the Bitterroot Valley this month. The training will be at the Ruffatto Ranch on Bass Creek Road near the Bass Creek Recreation Area. The helicopters and crews are arriving this week, with further training May 27-29. ....

Winter s pretty much over, so it s time to think about next winter, right? The Bitterroot National forest knows that harvesting firewood from the national forests happens year-round, so they want to let you know that you need a free permit to do it.
Forest Supervisor Matt Anderson said the free permit will let the forest personnel track where the harvesting is happening and also let people know about wildfire safety and collection rules. He said, Although these permits are normally offered with a nominal fee, we feel it is important to continue offering free firewood to the public this year. We just ask folks to follow the conditions and requirements listed on their permits and be respectful of other forest users and our natural resources. ....
