Oakmont officials are considering adopting a resolution to ban coal tar, a toxic chemical used to seal asphalt driveways.
There currently are no borough restrictions on the material some contractors use to seal driveways.
The black liquid also frequently is used on parking lots and playgrounds.
Fox Chapel approved its ban of coal tar in February.
Oakmont Council could vote on the matter at its May 17 meeting.

Of sponges and Serratia: Mt. Lebanon student's science project takes top honors | News

Natalie McGee’s could help save an important underwater resource.
The Mt. Lebanon High School junior’s research and experimentation focusing on a seldom-studied marine animal earned her a divisional first-place finish in the recent Pittsburgh Regional Science and Engineering Fair.
Perhaps more importantly, “Examining the Effects of Marine Microplastics on Porifera Microbial Filtration” pursues a potential avenue toward reversing the disappearance of earth’s coral reefs.
At issue is whether tiny plastic pollutants are inhibiting sponges, they of the phylum Porifera, from their normal function of consuming microbes and removing potentially harmful bacteria from the water.
“It was a topic that apparently had been overlooked by scientists until very recently, because a lot of the focus right now is on animals that actually consume the microplastics as food and how that could be a problem,” Natalie said. ....

Among the casualties that resulted from the start of the pandemic one year ago was the Carnegie Science Center’s Pittsburgh Regional Science & Engineering Fair, a tradition that began in 1940.
The start of the covid-19 crisis made holding the fair, usually scheduled for March, impossible to do in person and organizers didn’t have enough days to put together a virtual alternative. So, it was canceled in 2020.
Now the fair is back.
This month, more than 400 students in grades 6-12 will compete for scholarships and cash prizes as they present their science, math and engineering research projects. ....
