WMU program offers free tutoring, mentorship to KPS middle and high school students

KALAMAZOO, Mich. Reading, writing and refreshing web browsers are daily challenges for kids navigating virtual learning during the pandemic, but a Western Michigan University program provides struggling students a place to find support. The University s Office of Precollege Programming offers free drop-in virtual tutoring sessions for middle and high school students in Kalamazoo Public Schools (KPS).

Funded by the King-Chávez-Parks Initiative s College Day Program, Western students are employed to mentor and help with homework free of charge. Roughly 50 KPS students signed up for sessions during fall semester. That number has already more than doubled since winter break. ....

Sofia Lucerno Juarez disappeared the day before her 5th birthday on Feb. 4, 2003. The Charley Project website includes an age-progression photo showing what she may have looked like at age 17.
KENNEWICK Sofia Juarez’s disappearance left a hole in her family’s life that’s still apparent 18 years later.
“We plead with anybody that knows anything …. Please just come forward and let that light shine in that dark area because this family needs closure,” her aunt Victoria Juarez said through tears Thursday. ....

Upward Bound Program Offered to Local High School Students

Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford continues to offer an educational opportunity to eligible high school students with no costs to families.
Upward Bound is a federally funded college prep program funded through the U.S. Department of Education that offers services to qualified high school students based on family income and/or being a first-generation college student.
The SWOSU program, directed by Jamie Novey, supports high school students from the seven schools, including Burns Flat, Canute, and Clinton.
SWOSU officials say students may enter the program in the 9
th, 10
th or 11
th grades. Participants in the program are offered year-round academic counseling, cultural and educational field trips, social activities, tutoring and career exploration. ....

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) â Florida State Universityâs Center for Academic Retention and Enhancement has received a $205,500 donation of state and local funds to help improve college access for low-income and educationally disadvantaged students in grades 6-12.
This funding includes a $145,500 award from the Florida Department of Education College Reach-Out Program and $60,000 from the Community Human Service Partnership grant, sponsored by the City of Tallahassee and Leon County.
The new funding, combined with an Upward Bound grant that the program received last year, will result in a total of $603,238. ....
