Surety remanded for failure to produce suspect

A surety, Gajah Lovely, has been arraigned before Justice G. O. Imadegbelo of the Edo State High Court for failing to produce a suspect, Richman Pere, who he stood for.
Lovely was arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on two counts of conspiracy to pervert justice and failure to produce a suspect.
He pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Following the plea of the defendant, the EFCC counsel, Ibrahim Mohammed, asked the court for a trial date and to remand the defendant in a correctional facility.
Lovely’s counsel, Marta Imafu, moved a bail application of her client, but this was opposed by the prosecution counsel. ....

Beggars told to submit surety bonds for bails
As the police presented dozens of beggars before a local court on Thursday, the latter directed the nabbed persons to submit surety bonds of Rs5,000 against their bails.
Beggars who do not pay the surety amount are to be sent to jail, the court instructed the cops, who presented the beggars arrested by different police stations before the court.
Prior to the issuance of these directives, the investigation officer informed the court that the arrested persons were nabbed while they were begging at various traffic signals. ....

Palghar mob lynching case: Thane court grants bail to 89 people


A Thane court has granted bail to 89 people arrested in connection with the Palghar mob lynching case on a surety of Rs 15,000 each.
The 89 people were granted bail on the grounds that they were simply present at the spot, at the time of the incident.
The case pertains to the mob lynching of two sadhus and their driver on the night of April 16 this year, when they were travelling from Kandivali in Mumbai to attend a funeral in Gujarat s Surat amid the nationwide lockdown.
Their vehicle was stopped and they were allegedly attacked and killed by a mob in Gadchinchile village in the presence of police officers. ....

Minister of Public Security Sarath Weerasekera stated that Jaffna University is not the exclusive domain or property of one community.
In a message that was shared on his private Twitter account, he pointed “It belongs to all law-abiding #SriLanka(ns) alike.”
Continuing he added that no one will and should be allowed to commemorate dead terrorists of a proscribed organization under the guise of remembering innocent civilians and create disharmony.
Meanwhile, In protest to the incident that took place at the Jaffna University yesterday (09) night, five students of the Jaffna University has launched a hunger strike.
The monument which was erected in 2018 to commemorate the 10 years since the end of the war in Sri Lanka was removed by the university administration in the midst of the protest of the gathered. ....

In a big swoop,
Pune police bust a
major racket involving ‘fake sureties’ whereby accused-undertrials managed to furnish surety and secure bail in different cases, officials said on Thursday.
A total 37 persons, including six women, have been arrested in the operation directed by Pune police commissioner
Amitabh Gupta.
“This is a huge racket that has been bared. They have been operating for a long time. Our further investigations are on in the matter,” Gupta told mediapersons.
As per the preliminary investigations, these persons may have posed as ‘fake surety’ and helped over 25,000 accused-undertrials secure bail from the different courts. ....
