Engeset joins judge's line-up for conducting competition

The Brass Band Conductors Association (BBCA) has confirmed the adjudicating panel for the upcoming online version of its annual conducting competition.
New addition
In an exciting new addition, Flowers Band Musical Director Paul Holland, and Brendan Breslin, a former winner of the competition, will be joined by the internationally acclaimed Norwegian conductor Bjarte Engeset.
Engeset has worked as Music Director of the Tromsø Symphony Orchestra and the Norwegian Wind Ensemble, and is the Artistic Director of Norway s Northern Lights Festival and Opera Nord, as well as being permanent guest conductor of the Flemish Radio Orchestra.
He is the former Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of Sweden s Dalasinfoniettan and is currently Music Director of the Royal Norwegian Navy Orchestra. He has also worked with many leading professional orchestras as well as in the brass banding world with Bjørsvik Brass and Eikanger-Bjørsvik Musikklag. ....

They have been central to working-class life in mining communities for decades but Britain s colliery brass bands say they are now fighting to survive due to coronavirus restrictions.
With Britain again under lockdown, brass bands are struggling from the lack of opportunity to perform and drum up crucial funds, or even to practise together.
Even the most famous among them the Grimethorpe Colliery Band, which inspired the 1996 film Brassed Off! starring Ewan McGregor has not escaped the effects.
The issue really is about survival at the moment, Andrew Coe, director of the band, based in northern England and founded in 1917, told AFP. ....

“Just when you think you see a bit of light at the end of the tunnel, it’s all taken away again,” says Kenny Crookston, chief executive of Brass Bands England. The nation’s brass-banding community is feeling the pinch after a stop-start nine months without their usual revenue streams.
Of all Britain’s amateur music groups, brass bands are among the hardest-working. In a usual summer, they’re out every weekend, playing everything from gala concerts to open-air events. In winter, they pack in festive concerts and carol services, as the rush towards Christmas accelerates. The rehearsal schedule that most adopt – two hours, twice a week – is something to set your watch by, and there are tales of banders who haven’t missed a rehearsal in 30 years. ....
