Picture: Canva Plainclothes police officers could been seen patrolling bars and nightclubs in England and Wales, as part of a plan to protect women, it has been announced. The government had opposed an amendment to its domestic abuse bill that would create a national register of stalkers, but the House of Lords voted on Monday evening to send it back to MPs to consider. Within minutes, Boris Johnson announced a series of “immediate steps” to improve security.

Oak Tree Animals’ Charity, based in Wetheral, is among those reporting a “significant” increase in recent weeks in people contacting it to rehome their pet. Caroline Yon, head of animal welfare at Oak Tree, explained: “As the country moved into the first lockdown, demand for dogs reached an all-time high with reports of some puppies being sold for more than £2,000. “However, although being furloughed or working from home meant people had plenty of time, this was not necessarily such good news for the pets. “Our homes have never been so busy; home-working, home-schooling, shielding, and isolating have meant our pets have had very little downtime.
