Pueblo's first food court and affordable apartments coming to downtown

The next step of the Holmes Hardware building’s $15.3 million revitalization is just around the corner after Denver-based commercial real estate developers closed on the purchase of the historic structure at 400 S. Union Ave. Friday.
Fuel and Iron Project developers Nathan Stern and Zach Cytryn, who work with about 40 different restaurants in Denver as professional real estate brokers, hope to close on their financing package July 9 which will allow for construction work to begin July 19 on the landmark building.
If construction work all goes as planned, the ground-floor food court the first ever for Pueblo will open around May 1, 2022.
The 33,000-square-foot Union Avenue gem was rebuilt in 1915 after the 1911 wood-framed version was destroyed by fire. It withstood the 1921 flood and housed Holmes Hardware until 1948. ....

Greater Pueblo Chamber of Commerce President Rod Slyhoff dead at 66

Rod Slyhoff, the longtime Greater Pueblo Chamber of Commerce president who spent decades championing Pueblo and its businesses, died Monday at 66 years old. He had a heart condition.
Slyhoff began working for the chamber in 1988 and became its president in 1994 after he’d previously served as vice president of membership and small business development, membership director and account representative.
He was known throughout Pueblo as one of the city s fiercest advocates and greatest boosters and oversaw a period of unprecedented growth and expansion for the chamber. As its head, chamber membership grew from 800 to more than 1,300.
In October, Slyhoff and the chamber reached an agreement that would have seen him continue as its leader through 2024, at which point he said he was “very happy to continue to serve Pueblo and our business community.” ....

Pueblo county program allows businesses to operate with fewer COVID-19 restrictions

A long-awaited program that will enable qualifying and approved businesses to operate with fewer COVID-19 restrictions was officially kicked off in Pueblo on Tuesday at 1129 Spirts and Eatery.
The restaurant is one of the initial businesses, alongside Brues Alehouse, to join the county s COVID-19 health restrictions variance program. About 30 businesses are currently in the queue to become certified through the program and raise capacity.
Dubbed the Five Star Variance Program, Commissioner Garrison Ortiz has championed the program and sought state approval for its enactment since at least early December. Implementation was stalled due to the high number of active COVID-19 cases in the state, as well as the indicator level for COVID-19 in Pueblo County that remained at level Red. Others who have been involved in getting the project off the ground included the Latino Chamber of Commerce. ....
