Discovery recount confirms Rita Ali as winner of mayoral race

PEORIA, Ill. The results of the Peoria Mayoral Election still stand after a discovery recount was completed Monday by the Peoria County Election Commission.
The recount was requested by Mayor Rita Ali’s opponent, Jim Montelongo.
Official results confirmed Ali won with 8,240 votes compared to Montelongo’s 8,197.
Representatives from both campaigns, along with commission staff, inspected vote-by-mail applications, ballots and envelopes.
The process started Monday morning and ended around 4:30 p.m.
Ali was sworn in as Peoria Mayor on May 4.

Montelongo concedes, announces lawsuit

PEORIA, Ill. Jim Montelongo on Tuesday announced he has conceded the Peoria mayoral race to Mayor Rita Ali, but that he is also filing a lawsuit against the Election Commission.
Montelongo lost the April 6 election with 8,197 votes to Ali’s 8,240 votes, according to official results from the Peoria County Election Commission.
Ali was sworn in as Peoria’s new mayor on May 4.
A discovery recount requested by Montelongo’s campaign was completed Monday with the final vote count unchanged.
“I congratulate Rita on her victory and extend my very best wishes for her service as our mayor. I called Rita last night and we had a very warm conversation.” said Montelongo in a statement on Tuesday. ....

Discovery recount in Peoria mayoral race pushed back

PEORIA, Ill. The discovery recount for the Peoria mayoral race scheduled to be held Tuesday has been delayed after candidate Jim Montelongo requested information on ballot applications and voter affidavits.
Montelongo lost the April 6 election to fellow Peoria City Council Member Rita Ali with 8,197 votes to Ali’s 8,240, according to official results from the Peoria County Election Commission.
The applications and affidavits Montelongo requested are for precincts already requested in a petition for the discovery recount.
Montelongo’s request pushes back the recount to 9 a.m. May 10.
The Peoria County Election Commission said it will need roughly three days to gather the paper work. ....

Jim Montelongo is taking a wait and see approach on his decision whether to challenge Rita Ali s 43-vote win in the city s mayoral race in court.
I can t tell you what our next steps are yet as we have to see what happens next week, Montelongo told the Journal Star as he was cleaning out his desk in the City Council chambers after Tuesday night s meeting.
By that, he s referring to the results of a discovery recount Tuesday the same day Ali will be inaugurated to determine whether to take the next step and bring a court challenge.
If he chooses to, it s not expected to upend the planned inauguration ceremony for Ali and the five district council members. A far-tighter result in the Decatur area in 2018 was taken to court, and it didn t affect the swearing-in of the declared winner there, though that case is still ongoing. ....
