While the adoption of unmanned/uncrewed surfaces vessels (USVs) was initially in defence, use of these low footprint systems has spread into other sectors, not least survey, and now the race is on for greater capability, endurance and autonomy. Elaine Maslin reports.
After starting small, in inland waterways, use of USVs for survey operations has moved into coastal and now offshore waters. Given the extensive amount of seabed and rapid growth in offshore wind, there’s plenty of work out there for them to do. ....

Low-altitude Surveying on the French Mediterranean Coast

RIEGL tested the performance of its topo-bathymetric airborne laser scanning system in a transition zone context along the French Mediterranean coast. Initially planned as a UAV survey, tests were conducted using a fixed-wing aircraft due to the restrictions placed on operations by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The results are encouraging, and the next step will be drone operations in more challenging sea conditions.
Topo-bathymetric airborne laser scanning (a field of airborne laser bathymetry, or ALB) is known for its efficiency in seamlessly surveying hybrid landscapes. It is therefore used in hydrography and the maritime cartography of shallow water areas, and has the advantage of capturing topographic and bathymetric data in a single mission. Thales Alenia Space pays tribute to Jean-Claude Husson

Toulouse, May 3, 2021 - Thales Alenia Space, the joint company between Thales (67%) and Leonardo (33%), has paid tribute to former CEO Jean-Claude Husson, who passed away on April 28, 2021 at the age of 83. Because of his vision, humanity, pioneering spirit and passion for space, which he did so much to develop as an industry, he played a key role in a number of ambitious international projects in collaboration with the United States (NASA and industry), Russia (space agency Roscosmos and industry), Japan, China and India. He was an acknowledged pioneer in the development of constellations, end-to-end telecommunications systems and space-based altimetry.
Jean-Claude Husson started his career with the French Naval Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service (SHOM), in particular working in Madagascar and Mayotte. He held a number of management positions at French space agency CNES, including as Director of the Toulouse Space Center, and subsequently joined Ifremer, the French oceano ....
