The Kohala Center Receives $150,000 From the Office of Hawaiian Affairs

The Kohala Center received a $150,000 grant that will support the native Hawaiian community through the Office of Hawaiian Affairs’ (OHA) ‘Ohana and Community Based Program Grant for Hawaiʻi Island.
The grant will enable the center to address the interrelated needs of ‘āina, kānaka (people), and mo‘omeheu in the ahupua‘a (traditional mountain-to-sea land division) of Kawaihae in leeward Kohala, which includes the Honokoa watershed. Through its “Ho‘olauna Kawaihae: Building pilina through respectful engagement” initiative, The Center will use the grant funds to research, learn, assess, and incorporate ancestral practices to engage respectfully in restoring dryland native forests in the ahupua‘a and strengthening reciprocal relationships between its people and the natural environment. ....

Coastal News Today | HI - Shark Protection Bill Is A Misdirected Conservation Effort

House Bill 553 is a well-intentioned but fundamentally flawed and misdirected shark conservation effort.
Hawaii already has an excellent conservation environment for coastal sharks. The two-thirds of the Hawaiian archipelago contained within the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument are already completely protected from commercial and recreational fishing and there are no commercial fisheries for coastal sharks in the remaining third (i.e., the Main Hawaiian Islands).
Our conservation focus should be on maintaining and improving this already favorable environment.
The major problems with HB 553 are as follows.
No Meaningful Protection
The bill will produce no meaningful protection for sharks because targeted fishing for sharks (the focus of the bill) is already a rare activity in Hawaii. ....

ANAHOLA, Kauai The suspicious deaths of three Hawaiian monk seals on Kauai beaches including one that officials believe was shot late last year highlight the dangers threatening the recovery of the endangered species.
While the recent deaths remain under investigation, a new study found that human activity ranging from deliberate killings to fishing hooks was to blame for more than half of all known seal deaths in the islands over the past quarter century. ....
